The Indigenous Blacks & Mi’kmaq Initiative

The Indigenous Blacks & Mi’kmaq (IB&M) Initiative works to ensure that Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian students, as well as other Indigenous and Black students, are represented in the legal profession by reducing barriers
and increasing supports for students within the program.

The Initiative, established in 1989 as the first program of its kind in Canada, has been consistently and nationally recognized as a model for diversity in legal education. Since its inception, more than 240 Black and Indigenous graduates have gone on to pursue a wide range of legal careers within private law firms, the judiciary, community organizations, and government. They have also taken up a range of leadership roles across Canada and beyond.
